DEAR COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS!

The Day of Fatherland Defenders and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus has never been "devalued" in our society. And, despite its "male character," this holiday has become truly nationwide. A symbol of patriotism, loyalty to military duty, courage and steadfastness of Belarusians in their struggle for freedom and independence. Defender of the Fatherland Day in its best traditions personifies the continuity of generations in dedicated service to the Motherland.

In independent Belarus, this holiday was established by Decree of President Alexander Lukashenko on March 26, 1998. But despite more than a century of its history, the holiday has not lost its relevance and significance in our time. This topic was also voiced in the recent Presidential Address to the Belarusian people and the Parliament. The head of state stressed that the history of our Motherland is filled with vivid examples of heroism, valor and glory. Therefore, in the Year of Historical Memory, the patriotic theme should sound even stronger. This is especially true for upbringing of our youth.

The modern world requires each of us, regardless of where his "Kulikovo field" is - in the factory shop, in the hospital ward, in the educational classroom, in a scientific institution, or in the agrarian sector - in the words of the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky - "To praise the Fatherland". The strength of connection between the people, the state and our reliable defender, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, depends on each of us. That is why today, with special vigour, the words of gratitude are heard to those who, with weapons in their hands in the face of global threats, have taken responsibility for order, tranquillity, and peace on Belarusian land. In the current difficult environment, our country continues to be an example of a consistent peace-loving policy.

On the eve of February 23 - Defender of the Fatherland Day - let me congratulate everyone on this holiday, and wish peace, health, well-being, and mutual understanding. I wish you confidence in tomorrow, and success for the benefit of our Motherland.
