The Department of Selection and Genetics is 100 years old!
The Department of Selection and Genetics celebrated its 100th anniversary on November 20, 2020.
On November 19, a student section of the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Selection and Genetics: Innovation and Prospects," dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the department, was held. The conference was attended by the 2nd-5th year students of Agronomy Faculty. The future breeders made presentations on trending topics related to creation of the new starting material of white lupine using hybridization, the evaluation of the collectible material of common beans, seeded peas, narrow-leaved lupine, and meadow clover.
On November 20, the solemn meeting "We are 100 years old!" was held. The event was dedicated to the anniversary of the department. Head of the Department of Selection and Genetics G.Vitko, Vice-Rector for Educational Work M.Potapenko, Dean of the Agronomy Faculty N.Duktova, Dean of the Agroecological Faculty A. Kakshintsev, graduates of the Department and students of the specialty “Selection and Seed Farming” made their congratulatory speeches at the meeting.
The student of the 2nd year (group 3) Anna-Maria Kachanovskaya performed a song dedicated to selection – the science, thanks to which you can get new, sometimes very unusual varieties of plants. The song also sounded the words "Selection is one family, selection is only in BSAA". And it really is!
The 4th year student (Group 3) Elizaveta Haletskaya read the author’s poem about the difficult and long-term work of a breeder.
After the solemn meeting, the participants could visit the exhibition of the Selection and Genetics Department’s achievements, which included the educational and methodological work of the department, the work of the scientific and pedagogical schools of professors G.Taranukho and V.Bushueva. One could see a huge number of seeds, ear and sheaf material of agricultural plants, as well as varieties and sorts of grain and leguminous crops, perennial legumes, created by the department's employees as a result of their research work. Creative works of students and staff of the department were also presented at the exhibition.
In addition, a tasting was organized at the exhibition to try baking with the use of white lupin flour of the “Rosbel” variety of the department’s selection. A lottery was also organized, where pendants made with the use of lupine, beans, and galega seeds were presented as gifts.
At the end of the festive programme, prizes were awarded to the winners of the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Selection and Genetics: Innovation and Prospects."
