Dear friends!
On July 3, our country celebrates one of its main public holidays - Independence Day. This year it is painted with colours of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders. It is celebrated throughout the republic on a truly nationwide scale.
In the calendar of significant dates, Republic Day is one of the young ones. The decision to celebrate Independence Day on July 3 - the anniversary of the liberation of the capital of our Motherland from Nazi invaders - was made at a republican referendum on November 24, 1996. The corresponding Decree on the establishment of this holiday was signed by President Alexander Lukashenko on December 11, 1996.
This holiday is filled with a special meaning for every Belarusian family. It unites the destinies of different generations, reminds of the long and difficult path that they had to go through. After all, the Great Patriotic War, on the Altar of Victory of which Belarus put every third of its inhabitants, was not the only test that Belarusians had been through. "Our history of over 1,000 years is a constant struggle of the people for their land, spiritual values and self-determination. And even after the appearance of sovereign Belarus on the world map, we constantly have to defend our right to an independent path of development". Our President made this conclusion even before the well-known events of 2020, as a result of which we could then lose both our independence and our country.
Today, 83 years after the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the feat of the generation of winners is really dear to us. And our sacred duty is to keep this Memory and pass it on to the youth.
We will continue to strengthen our sovereignty, protect and strengthen peace on "your piece of land". We will make our independent Belarus even richer and more beautiful with our creative work.
It is also symbolic that, according to the Presidential Decree of June 7, 2021, the Belarusian people have another public holiday - National Unity Day, which we celebrate on September 17. By this we pay tribute to the unity of generations of the Belarusian people, who "carried the war on their own shoulders." Our people took a worthy place in the international community. They became one of the founders of the United Nations. And today we pursue a peaceful domestic and foreign policy.
Please accept sincere congratulations on the Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus! I wish health, peace, goodness, happiness, confidence and prosperity!
Sincerely yours,
Vitaly VELIKANOV
Academy Rector.
